Particularly for tradesmen, an NGT drive system offers many advantages and – especially in the monovalent variant – has an extremely low level of exhaust emissions. A bivalent NGT van is by no means inferior to its conventionally powered counterpart with respect to operating range and reliability of supply, for if required it can be simply switched over from natural gas to petrol operation.

Although a whole series of alternative drives are basically hybrid concepts, it is the combination of an internal-combustion engine - be it petrol or diesel - with one or more electric motors that is generally called a "hybrid drive".

The fuel cell is another alternative for emission-free driving. The prototype fuel-cell Sprinter which debuted in 2001 represented an important milestone in the development process as its testing was conducted under tough practical conditions and served a crucial step on the road to making it suitable for everyday use.
